Hey hey hey! Another week over.
Our guest speaker could not make it to the lecture, so we watched a recording of his visit from last year.
This weeks guest was Edward Melvin. Edward is a Project Manager from ICAN. This is a link to the company’s website; http://www.ican.ie/flash/ .
Edward started by telling us how he got into working in the Digital Media sector. Whilst in college, he worked for a bi-monthly newsletter. Here he had to meet deadlines for the release of the letter. This was the progression forward for him.
ICAN is a ‘digital’ advertising and communications agency. They help their clients to make the right decisions. They use strategies to help define a vision. The projects involve creativity, teamwork, planning and experience. Some of the services that ICAN provide include Web Design, Search Marketing, Online PR and Project & Campaign Management.
Advertising is the core business of ICAN. One example of the work is for the World Rally Championships on Ireland. They made a video where you can insert yours or a friends face into the video and email it to people.
The company focuses on engaging people and converting. Converting depends on the project objectives. This includes a sale, a download, a visit or an enquiry.

Why do people advertise online?
There is a clear return on investment. More people are using the internet to communicate. Online campaigns are also more flexible.
A good brief provides clarity. Clear objectives and metrics and a definition of who is involved are all elements of providing a clear brief. A bad brief can provide opportunity. Here is where the agency helps the client to figure out an idea.
A concept is an idea of how the project will work. It is communicated through storyboards, visual designs and core propositions.
The most important part of any stage id the plan. This is because changes are easier to change at this point of the project.
The primary role of the Project Manager is to ensure that a profitable project is delivered on time and to the clients expectations. A successful project is ensured by keeping realistic estimates, detailed planning and/or effective communication.
Agency work is said to be fast paced, hectic, stressful and is rapidly changing. It is also rewarding and exciting.

Although this is in the Digital Media sector, it does not appeal to me. I am more interested in the animating end of Digital Media. This lecture did open my eyes more on a part of the sector that I did not really know all that much about!
In Clodagh’s class, we were learning about Spirals. We made a petal shape using the circle tool. We clicked on the artboard and inserted a height of 150px and height of 25px. When this was drawn, we chose transform each and selected the option that we required such as a 30 degree angle. By pressing CMD+D, we repeated the petal until we had a complete flower. After this, we selected all of the ‘petals’ an chose unite from the Pathfinder tool to get rid of the unwanted lines inside.
We repeated the same process but replaced the circle with a star. We used the direct selection tools to change the shape.
We drew out another star, and selected each of the points and used the handles to swap around and make an inverted point. We then transformed the scale.
We opened the surfboard image from before and copied it three times. We used a number of different effects from the Pathfinder tool to change the image.
Next we typed the word ‘green’ and gave it two stroke colours by turning it to outline mode. We recreated a flower to put underneath it.
Finally, we created a logo using different sized circles and the divide tool. This is the result.
